Regulation basketball hoops are suspended 10’ | 3.05 m from the playing surface and have a standard rim diameter of 18” | 46 cm. The vertical backboard surface is made of plexiglass or tempered glass to prevent shattering and is sized at 42” x 72” | 110 x 183 cm. Basketball rims are manufactured from high tensile carbon steel to provide the ball with the correct amount of bounce while also having give for players that can dunk.

Look for 54″ or 60″ size boards with 3/8″ thick glass and 72″ boards with 1/2″ glass for gym-correct rebound. 3/8″ glass on a 54″ or 60″ backboard provides the same rebound as a regulation 72″ backboard made of 1/2″ glass but has the advantage of being lighter making it easier to adjust the rim height for your little ones.
According to both organizations, the basketball backboard must be a flat, transparent board that is 6 feet wide. The NBA allows only one height, 3 1/2 feet. However, although the NCAA regulations favor a 3 1/2-foot height, 4 feet is allowed.
Per NBA regulations, the dimensions of a basketball backboard are 6 feet wide by 3 ½ feet high. The backboard is marked with a 2-inch white rectangle that is centered behind the ring; the rectangle's outer dimensions are 24 inches wide by 18 inches high. The basket itself consists of a metal ring with an 18-inch inner diameter and a white cord net that is 15 to 18 inches long.
